How Martin Disley began his professional life as a soccer player, scored a job in lighting and is now the UK Regional Partner for Xero Linear Lighting.

Martin’s career path more closely resembles one of Georgie Best’s blistering runs from the half way line than it does a traditional lighting executives rise to fame and fortune.
He is quoted as saying: “I pretty much fell into the lighting industry. I left school in the UK at 15 to take up a professional football (soccer) contract. That was my job for the next 7 years. I ended up in lighting via playing soccer in New Zealand.
I went to New Zealand for 3 months, ended up falling in love with the place and decided to stay. As soccer in New Zealand is not full time professional and pay was low I needed to get a real job and it so happened that Aesthetics Lighting was the main sponsor of the team I played for. They gave me a job!
I started out working in the store (which I hated) then moved into an admin role (which I hated). During this time however, my MD saw I had a really good rapport with clients in the showroom and speaking over the phone so they decided to throw me in at the deep end and send me out on the road assisting mainly architects with design and specification (I loved it). I spent 14 years in total with Aesthetics working my way up to a sales management role.”
Over the years Martin has worked on many projects in both New Zealand and Australia ranging from healthcare, commercial office fitouts, education, high end residential, sporting applications (both indoor and outdoor) and some important railway infrastructure and WETA, Peter Jackson’s post-production facilities in Wellington, New Zealand.
He rates establishing Forlite and helping it become known in the Queensland market as a well respected lighting supply company that clients could confidently rely on and the 14 years he spent with Aesthetics Lighting as career highlights. but says that without a doubt the vision presented to him by Edwin Sargeant and the opportunities to make a difference at XERO is a dream come true.

We have created an online configuration engine that allows sales partners to configure product based on a rules engine, and obtain ‘shop drawings’ and ‘factory assembly drawings’ automatically. The configuration engine integrates Pro-engineer with a back end server that creates the collateral automatically.
This same technology will be connected to our online store and a payment gateway allowing customers to configure and purchase our product online. This is a first for our market segment.
